LSS 5.6 Schedule

The following are tentative dates for various events in the Avera LSS world:

Dragon: Customizing Philips SpeechMike Function Keys

If you have a Philips SpeechMike Pro Plus handset, you can custom program the keys on the handset to automatically enter text when you press specific keys.  The keys at the top of the handset (EOL, Record, INS/OVR, F.RWD, PLAY/STOP, F.FWD) are preprogrammed with useful keys for Dragon.

The F1, F2, F3 and F4 keys are generally available for custom programming for the user.

For instance, the handset can be programmed so pressing the F1 key enters your PWM password.

Have the PWM software as the active software.  This will allow the changes you make to the SpeechMike Driver apply to the PWM software.

Open up the SpeechMike Control application by selecting Start -> Programs -> SpeechMike Driver Utility -> Control Application.

This will open up a window display the SpeechMike control application.  The available buttons are listed on the left and the assigned keystrokes on the right.  Delete any previous keystrokes in the upper window using the delete button (looks like a red x).

1.  Scroll down to the F1 button.

2. Double click on this entry.  The Button Properties window should appear.

3. At the Keyboard Input line, select Text.

4. Type in your username and press Enter on the keyboard.  The text should appear in the upper window.

5. At the Keyboard Input line, select Hotkey.

6.  Press Enter on the keyboard, the word <Enter> should appear in the upper window below the your text.

7.  At the Keyboard Input line, select Text again.

8 Type in your password and press Enter on the keyboard.  The text should appear in the upper window below the <Enter> line.

9.  At the Keyboard Input line, select Hotkey again.

10.  Press Enter on the keyboard.  <Enter> should appear in the upper window.

11.   Press the Close button on the Button Properties window to save your entry.

12. Select File ->Save in the SpeechMike Control window to permanently save your entry.

13. Minimze the SpeechMike Control program.  If you exit the program, the handset will stop functioning, however, you can restart the application program and the handset should resume functioning.

You should now be able to use the F1 key on the SpeechMike Pro Plus handset to enter in your password for PWM.  You will have to edit these entries when your password changes in the future.

Dragon: Turning Off Unused Voice Commands

There are a number of types of voice commands in Dragon that you may never use.  For instance, there are voice commands in Dragon to do the following:
  • Control mouse movement with voice commands
  • Surf the internet with voice commands
  • Control a word processor with voice commands
  • Use the word "Click" to select menu items
You may be able to speed up the processing time of Dragon by turning off any or all of these features you don't use.  Using voice commands requires more processing power than just recognizing text. If you don't normally use voice commands in certain situations or in certain programs, for example with Internet Explorer, you can speed up Dragon NaturallySpeaking by turning off this ability.

To turn off some of these commands:

On the Dragon menu, goto Tools->Options->Commands.

If you don't use voice commands to surf the internet, clear the "Enable commands in HTML windows" box if it is selected.

If you don't use voice commands to control mouse movements, clear the "Enable mouse motion commands" box if it is selected.

If you don't use voice commands to control word processing, click on the Natural Languange Commands button and clear the "Enable Natural Language Commands" box if it is selected.

If you don't use the word "Click" to control menus and controls, clear the "Require 'Click' to select menus and controls" box if it is selected.

If you don't use voice commands to manage E-mail and calenders, then clear the "Enable E-mail and Calender commands" box if it is selected.

Examine this menu and see if there are any other voice commands you will not use and then clear them.

After making these changes, you will have to exit and restart Dragon for the changes to take effect.

How I Do It: Accessing Images from Other Facilities

I like being able to see radiology reports and x-rays from LSS.  Recently, I was able to look at a CT from a trauma patient at Avera McKennen, who was referred to me for a chest mass.  On the CT from the trauma evaluation, I was able to see a rib deformity to account for the chest mass, even through the radiology report did not mention the abnormality.

Setting Preferences

Overview: Allows setting of certain preferences for how the system works, for display of tasks, use of acknowledgement button, and alert for patient waiting.

Location: Footer button on the Desktop when viewing the Task List.

Buttons: Click the Preference footer button on the Desktop to open up the Preferences screen, then click on the Desktop toggle button to set the desk top preferences summarized below.

  • Desktop Default: Sets the type of tasks to be displayed on the desktop.
    • All: All tasks will be displayed, including priority and non-priority task (i.e. priority is set to None).
    • Priority: Only priority tasks will be displayed
  • Use Acknowledge Button
    • Yes: The user must manually click the Acknowledge footer button to acknowledge and remove a forwarded item on the Task List.
    • No: The task will be automatically acknowledged when the Task Detail screen is viewed using the View Detail footer button followed by closing the Task Detail screen by clicking the List footer button to return to the Task List.
  • Provider Indicator of Patient Waiting
    • Header: An alert in red text stating "Patient Waiting" when the patient has been roomed and is waiting.
    • Popup: A popup window appear with the patient's name when the patient has been roomed and is waiting.
    • None: No alert is given for a patient roomed and waiting.
